There’s nothing more annoying than trying to apply concealer over bumpy under-eye skin. The uneven texture makes it nearly impossible to get a smooth, flawless finish, making you want to toss your cover-up into the garbage and forget it altogether. You’re not alone in the issue, though: plenty of women are dealing with the same thing, and there’s actually an easy fix.
In a recent thread, Redditors were comparing their own under-eye skin problems, and while many blame the uneven texture on their sebaceous glands—which can become enlarged when the sebum they release becomes trapped—that’s probably not the case, according to one dermatologist.
“Most times, it’s due to normal textural variations in skin, not a condition or growth pattern,” explains New York City-based dermatologist Libby Rhee, DO. “Some people are more genetically predisposed to textural accentuation, like those who genetically have wider or smaller pores.” And one of the biggest causes of the tiny bumps you’re seeing? Your hydration level.

To treat the uneven under-eye skin, Dr. Rhee recommends first focusing on drinking more water and keeping your skin hydrated with a good moisturizer. Then if the problem persists, you have some choices. You can smooth things out with gentle resurfacing lasers at the derm, through microneedling, or something as simple as applying cucumbers or warm or cold steeped green tea bags over your eye area. “That will help plump up the skin in the area in general, which helps diminish their appearance,” she explains.
After giving your eye area a little extra TLC—and finally committing to drinking more water on the daily!—your concealer won’t look so wonky. Plus, you’ll be left with a brighter under-eye area for more reasons than one.
