Meet the Cleansing Body Scraper That’ll Make You Feel ‘As Smooth as a Seal’

Certain quasi-ancient skin-care devices make the case that a good tool used in a solid routine is timeless. Just take the jade roller and gua sha, for instance. But while many of these examples focus on the face, it's also very true that your neck-down skin can use some TLC. Enter the Esker Body Plane ($45), a Greco-Roman-inspired product that makes Ella Dove, video producer and host of What the Wellness, feel "like a little baby seal."

"It's basically a scrape for your body," Dove says in the most recent episode of the YouTube series. "It's used to exfoliate your skin in combination with some body oil to leave you feeling smooth and moisturized, without any dead skin cells left on your body."

The inspiration behind the Esker Body Plane is called a strigil, a sickle-looking tool used in Ancient Greek and Roman cultures for, well, bathing, essentially. According to Shannon Davenport, founder of Esker Beauty, the original function of the strigil was that it was the cleanser of choice for gladiators, the celebrities of the time. "They would coat themselves in oil, and then they would use this Captain Hook–looking creepy metal tool to scrape their skin and cleanse it," she says in the video.

The Esker Body Plane, though from created with the strigil in mind, is a decidedly less lethal-looking form of the tool. And what makes it uniquely different than other modern body exfoliators it's meant to not disrupt or harm your moisture barrier. The inclusion of the oil ensures that you're soft, while the Esker Body Plane itself gets rid of any residue along with the dead skin. (And yes, you can see the receipts for proof on your towel afterward.) Think of this as a "pore strip for your body," as Dove puts it.
