Switching to clean beauty and makeup products has been part of your burnout to-do list for what feels like years (but who’s counting).
According to makeup artist and Credo Beauty ambassador Allie Compton, however, it’s as easy as focusing on three specific swaps, which she dived into at our latest Wellness Collective event with Athleta. (Psst: Guests also got a full glowy-makeup tutorial plus each product to take home.)
“Don’t panic or be overwhelmed with swapping, do it as you run out,” Compton said. “Go back and think which products you grab most often in the morning.” In other words, which ones are must-apply in the midst of your morning sprint and which ones are just occupying space in the back of your drawer?
The first item she recommends upgrading is lipstick, because every time you swipe on a bold lip, you could be ingesting ingredients like aluminum, parabens, and lead. Compton prefers a non-toxic formula that can work overtime (she swears by Inner Glow Creme Pigment, which acts as a lip color, blush, and eyeshadow). “Three-in-one products are great for when you’re on the go or in a hurry,” she added.
The next swappable must-have is mascara. According to Compton, many typical formulas contain thimerosal, a mercury-based element that’s often used as a preservative, formaldehyde (yikes), and aluminum powder. A natural alt is Ilia Lash Mascara, which features a dual-sided brush (one side for brushing out and separating your lashes, the other for adding volume).
For the third and final swap, Compton suggests choosing your most-used all-over face product, whether that’s tinted moisturizer, foundation, or highlighter (you’ll be steering clear of parabens, synthetic colors, and coal tar dyes here).
