The sweatshirt is a piece at the crux of many an athleisure-lovers wardrobe, however, it needn’t be reserved for lazy days, travel, or workouts. Going beyond baggy hoodies, the newest versions come sporty and sleek for a more tailored fit than their oversized counterparts.

“The sweatshirt has become the quintessential layering piece,” says Roopal Patel, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue. “It’s less casual now, and we’re always thinking of ways to elevate it and dress it up.” She cites Rosie Assoulin, Off-White, Unravel Project, and Calvin Klein as designers who have put a creative spin on the cult item.

No longer exclusive to off-duty style, Patel explains how a sweatshirt becomes smart when worn in juxtaposition with tailored pieces. “You can style it under a Prince Of Wales checked blazer or over a pinstripe collared shirt and wear it with tailored trousers or skirts.”

The key is reaching for a sweatshirt when you’d otherwise wear a blouse or tee, which Jennifer Bandier, owner of her namesake fitness boutique, says adds an instant "cool factor" to any outfit. “While they can be fitted and made of luxurious fabrics, the silhouette and casual nature of the garment adds a streetwear vibe to even the most clean-cut looks."

Two more ways to rock a sweatshirt this season: Add a matching bottom to create an of-the-moment sweat set. Or, use it in place of a beach cover-up—perhaps over your new yellow swimsuit.
