The French Pharmacy Beauty Product Roxie Darling Uses Instead of Mascara

You know those skin-care and beauty products that you use until the very last drop? The ones that you’ve spent entire brunches/text threads/email chains, telling your friends about? They’re the best of the best…so amazing that you’d never risk putting them in a piece of checked luggage. At Well+Good, we call those our Beauty VIPs (you know, Very Important Products). In this series, we ask women in wellness and the public eye what beauty products they use every single day and why—with an entire Internet of options to choose from—these items stand out.

Hairstylists have long been de-facto therapists, listening to women talk about the ups-and-downs of life, but hair colorist Roxie Darling takes that a step further. Aside from being one of the coolest hair colorists in the biz, presiding at the chic, New York City salon Suite Caroline, she also offers her clients a dazzling dye sesh with a side of woo-woo wellness.

In other words, she puts the hue in human connection, taking time to really understand the needs of every client who passes through her chair. As a self-proclaimed intuitive color healer (just read her thoughts on Pantone's color of the year), the approach to intentional beauty stands out. According to Darling, her own routine is super "low maintenance," and she's pretty loyal to the products that work for her (and that she connects to spiritually, of course). Here, the ones that she keeps in regular rotation.

Pai Kukui & Jojoba Bead Skin Brightening Exfoliator, $44

“My favorite skin-care line to use at the moment is Pai. I love their Kukui cleanser and I will use that once or twice a day, depending on if I wore makeup that day. If I haven't worn makeup, then at the end of the day I won’t use soap on my face, I’ll just use a towel with really hot water to cleanse my face of any dirt," she says. "I don’t necessarily like to use soap on my face if I don’t need to."

L'Oréal Paris Infallible Gel Crayon, $6

"I recently got off the mascara train because I’m finding that it makes my eyes a little irritated at the end of the day. Mascara has always been my go to, but right now I’m into this waterproof, blue gel eyeliner," Darling says. "I actually bought it in Paris at the Monoprix, which has amazing skin-care products. The name of the color is 'I’ve Got the Blue.' I love blue personally. I have blue eyes. Blue is good for me because it’s really calming.” Take note: If you don't have a trip to Paris on the horizon for this French pharmacy staple, try L'Oréal Paris Infalliable Pro-Last Waterproof Eyeliner in Cobalt Blue.

Heritage Aura Glow Rose Oil, $11

"For an all-over body moisturizer, I love rose oil. Rose is an incredible herb, flower, and medicinal being. The pH of rose is really great for the hair and skin," she says. "It’s very calming. I recommend rose oil to a lot of my clients and a lot of my people."

Givenchy Mister Light Instant Light Corrective Pen, $37

"I use a Givenchy concealer from Sephora called Mister Light to brighten up my under eye bags," she says. "Because it's sheer it doesn’t cover my freckles, and it really helps my under eye bags."

Avène Eau Thermale Thermal Spring Water, $19

"I absolutely love this hydration mist on my face in the mornings when I'm getting ready as well as before I go to bed," she tells me. "It is a newer step in my skincare routine because with dry and sensitive skin like mine, I need all of the hydration I can get."
