Why Naomi Watts Treats Her Skin-Care Regimen Like a Workout

Here's a sentence I never thought I'd write: Turns out that Naomi Watts and I share similar skin-care habits. (Gasp!) The Australian movie star admits that she's constantly trying new products in her beauty routine to keep her skin guessing (as a beauty editor, I do the same).

"I like to shock my skin into things," Watts tells Into The Gloss in a recent interview. "I don't want my skin to get FOMO." Cute concept—I feel the same way with my unused beauty products. You don't want any bottles to feel left out, you know?

"I don't want my skin to get FOMO."

The star of the show Gypsy (and my personal fave movie The Ring) goes on to say that she treats her skin regimen like it's a fitness routine. "I also think that skin care is a bit like working out," says Watts. "You have to change it up every so often."

The thing is, your beauty products take roughly 28 days to work (based on your skin cells' natural turnover cycle)—so many dermatologists say to try and be consistent with your regimen for at least a month. Then again, others are firm believers in switching your skin-care products based on the seasons, just as you (should) do with food. So it's up to you.

Watts admits she's a major fan of clean products (in fact, she helped bring together the duo behind the New York City clean-beauty haven Onda)—from brands like True Botanicals, Beauty Chef, and Joanna Vargas—and likes to rotate what she uses. "It's good to use them, and then try other things," she says. Perhaps she was a beauty editor in a past life?

To get more skin-care savvy like Watts, these are the differences between serums, oils, moisturizers, and balms. And these are the 3 most important skin-care swaps to make first when going natural.
