Princess Eugenie’s Most Flawless Bridal Accessory? Her Spinal Surgery Scar

Many people try to hide scars one way or another—whether with clothing, fancy creams, laser treatments, or something else. But for a growing number, those marks are exactly what they should be: a reminder of strength and resilience to be worn proudly for all the world to see. Princess Eugenie, for one, made sure her scar was her most flawless bridal accessory as she walked down the aisle during her recent wedding at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

When she was dreaming up her dress, she made an important request to British designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos: to have a lower-cut back that featured her spinal surgery scar, reports BBC News. At 12 years old, she underwent a procedure to correct her scoliosis, and because the mark is commemorative of her life journey, she had no intention to  cover it up on her big day. "It's a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this," she tells the UK’s This Morning. "I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars. I think it's really special to stand up for that."

With Princess Eugenie being so candid about obstacles she's overcome—and the scars they've left behind—hopefully others won't feel like they need to hide their past either. Because, sure, her emerald tiara and earrings were stunning bridal accessories—but nothing came close to being as statement-making as her battle wound.
