Sportswear nostalgia is a chief look in fashion at the moment. From streetwear brands like Fila and Adidas back in the spotlight to the return of old-school silhouettes (though, reinterpreted through a modern lens), the latest crop of It pieces come with vintage appeal. A particular item of interest? Retro running shorts cut high on the thigh with pipe trim.

Pastel versions made a notable runway appearance during the spring and summer collections. “In what has likely been their most-extreme, high-fashion form, running shorts graced the Louis Vuitton runway paired with brocade coats, but there are more sensible ways to get the ‘athluxury’ look,” says stylist and brand consultant, Rachael Wang.

As with many athleisure staples, the new running short is built for versatility and meant to be worn for more than daily workouts. “Obviously, they pair great with sneakers and crewneck sweatshirts to take inspiration from Yeezy, extra trend points for ‘ugly’ or ‘dad’ sneakers,” Wang explains.

If you tend to gravitate toward feminine pieces, there’s a running shorts formula for you, too. “For the fashionably brave, I think they work quite well with low chunky heeled sandals in bright colors and topped with a puffy sleeved blouse,” says Wang. “For a more chic pairing, accessorize running shorts with elegant flat slides and a slim tank or tee worn tucked in.”

Below are six pairs of running shorts to buy now. Let the retro revival live on.
