Functional swimwear is essential for doing anything more than sun bathing or going for a dip. Have you ever tried playing beach volleyball in a string bikini? It’s hard to concentrate on kills when you’re concerned about keeping your top on—just saying. So, if you’re in search of a suit that’s comfortable, flattering, and designed for being active, there are a few key details to keep in mind.
For those spending a lot of time in the sun, Sabra Krock, co-owner and creative director of buzzy swimwear boutique Everything But Water says, “rash guards and sleeved one-pieces (short and long) with UPF 50+ will offer protection against sunburn and the elements. There are now also some very cute water leggings, to boot!”
“Tops that offer good support elements for larger busts are also great for active people of all bust sizes.”
If you’re seeking a silhouette that’ll make you feel totally secure during water sports, Krock recommends tops that are cropped for more coverage or those with thicker straps. “Tops that offer good support elements for larger busts are also great for active people of all bust sizes,” she explains. “Look for X-back, T-back, or stay-put straps or under-bust banding.”
You could also take a stylish cue from surfer girls. “Neoprene suits offer both sun protection and hold you in,” says Krock, adding that the fabric can provide additional warmth and water protection which is ideal for surfers and paddle boarders. Plus, she says, “They’re now offered in very fashionable designs.”
And just like those high-waisted leggings that really hold you in, suits created from four-way stretch fabric are as “comfortable and practical to wear for water sports,” says Krock, as they are to a sweat sesh on land.
