The genius hack you need to know for applying facial oil

If you’ve ever shied away from using facial oils (“I already have greasy skin!” “I don’t want to feel oily all day!” “I break out easily!” “I don’t even know where to start!”), here’s a technique to cut the intimidation factor.

Step one

Pick your oil. (Some can help with acne, some just work on that whole supple-and-smooth thing.)

Step two

Whip out the (preferably unused) Beautyblender sponge that’s holding court in your bathroom cabinet. Turns out, it’s so much more than just brilliant tool for blending your favorite foundation or BB cream.

Step three

Use your super sponge to apply your skincare products. You can use all the oil you want on your face without any of the lingering greasiness on your fingertips—it’s a fail-safe way to get a lighter, more even layer.

“It’s a great way to target drier areas on your face, and it’s a fab way to sheer out richer or creamier formulas on oily skin,” writes Isabella Muse on her beauty blog, Musings of a Muse. Just don’t blend your blenders: Muse recommends keeping separate sponges for your skincare and makeup products. —Alison Feller
