The strangest natural remedy for split ends

Screen Shot 2015-07-10 at 10.21.07 AMNothing ruins a good hair day better than ugly split ends, and the internet is currently crazed over a new (and super strange) natural remedy for frazzled tresses.

According to Mashable, Velaterapia is a Brazilian hair treatment that consists of twisting small sections of hair and burning off the ends with a candle, allegedly to retain moisture. The remedy originated in Brazil during the 1960s, but has garnered attention recently as celebs like models Alessandra Ambrosio and Barbara Fialho have posted pictures of themselves using it on Instagram.

But it’s not catching fire with all hair stylists. “The theory around the heat of the candle opening the cuticle to allow maximum conditioning absorption seems unnecessary and a threat to the hair. My opinion? Danger. Especially if someone is not carefully trained in this treatment,” says Dop Dop Salon master stylist Jay Vosper.

So maybe stick to deep conditioning, for now.—Emily Karr
