Beach Please: Here’s How Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Really Get Their Signature Waves

Ever since they were babies on Full House, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been two steps ahead of the game style-wise. And, while they've gone through phases of trends—from oversized Balenciaga bags to vintage Levi flares—one has remained pretty consistent: Their au naturale, beach-vibe hair.

Thankfully, their lips are no longer sealed as to how they pull off that perfectly undone look. According to an interview with Byrdie, it takes two (things): dry shampoo and a specific waving iron. And the foundation of it all is to start by letting lengths air-dry.

“I wash my hair every other day and never blow-dry it,” says Ashley. “I go out with wet hair and just let it dry naturally.”

“I rarely ever pick up a blow-dryer,” their hair stylist Mark Townsend adds. “All I do is grab random chunks of hair here and there and wrap them in a figure-eight shape around the barrel,” he says. To get the look, he uses the double-barrel Rsession Tools Nalu Waver ($109), and takes care not to let hair rest on the iron for too long. Then, he shakes out each curl to make the texture look loose and natural, finishing with Dove Dry Shampoo ($4) throughout the hair for a nice texture.

“At the end of the day, I think that [our fans] appreciate how natural we are,” says Mary-Kate. “For us, it’s all about what makes us feel good. We don’t really overdo it, and maybe that’s where it stems from.” Trés chic—time to copy.
