3 awesome early-summer retreats that don’t require a plane ticket

In June, hop a ferry or a ride to these yoga and fitness retreats with star teachers that are all 3 hours away or less from New York City.

Everyone wants to do yoga in Turks & Caicos and beach boot camps in Bali, but there are times when those options aren’t feasible, thanks to precious vacation time and, all too often, the need to pay rent.

So, this spring, a few of New York’s top boutique fitness studios and yoga instructors are hosting their shape-up retreats closer to home. They offer all the required elements of a fitness vacation—quality classes and instruction, relaxation time on the beach or amid the Catskill Mountain, great meals, and free massages. (Okay, we totally made up that last one.)

You just won’t need a plane ticket (or a raise) to get there. Here are three awesome summer kick-off retreats happening this June, all within a three-hour drive of New York City. —Lisa Elaine Held

1. Make a Break for the Beach: SummerYoga Retreat
Escape plan: A 45-minute ferry ride

Hop on a ferry for a quick ride to northern New Jersey, where you’ll spend the weekend with Kula and Bend & Bloom star instructor, Summer Shirey, at the beautiful Seven Arrows Farm. Bring your bike so you can pedal to Sandy Hook’s beaches when you’re not in downward dog, and meals will be, um, literally farm to table. Bonus: The retreat includes an acupuncture session. June 14–16, $450–$575 per person, www.summeryoganyc.com

2. Uplift in the Hamptons
Escape plan: A 2.5-hour drive

The fit-and-fab women behind women’s-only workout studio Uplift are a weekend retreat in Amangansett, a first for the year-old studio. Your stay at Ocean Vista will alternate between beach workouts and dinner-and-wine fests at Hamptons hot spots. You can expect both the plyometrics and the partying to be hard. June 14—16, $995, email info@upliftstudios.com

3. Summertime Sattva in the Catskills
Escape plan: A 3-hour drive

Marisa Sako, another Kula and Bend & Bloom fave instructor, leads this sweet, low-key retreat in the Catskills that includes daily yoga classes and meals sourced primarily from Heathen Hill’s organic garden. When you’re not flowing through sun salutations, you can take a dip in the pond. Campfire marshmallow roasting included. June 21–23, $390–$475, www.marisasako.com
