You’ve tried Surfset with your favorite instructor and you’re a fan of stand-up paddling. Next step, actual surfing!

“Surfing is the best workout for both your body and your mind,” says Calavera founder Anna Jerstrom, an investment banker turned surfer and bathing-suit designer, who personally test-drives every suit she makes for stay-put-ness.

Here are Jerstrom’s top six reasons why you should get on a board this summer:

1. It’s the ultimate workout.
Surfing requires you to have endurance and explosive power. Paddling out to the line-up, staying in position amid currents while trying to catch the wave—or trying to avoid it breaking on your head—requires an explosion of energy and power. It gives you the perfect combination of aerobic and anaerobic training. And yes, there’s a lot of core stability required, too.

2. You’ll leap out of bed for it.
There are very few things for which I will bounce out of bed at 5 a.m. for. Finding an activity that inspires such joy is something that people look for all their lives. I’m so glad I found mine.

3. It’s never, ever boring.
If you ever get in a fitness rut, well, it just doesn’t happen in surfing. One surf session is never the same as another. No two waves are the same. You never know what mother nature is going to send your way when you are sitting out there in the water! There’s a Buddhist message in there too, I’m sure.

4. You get to commune with and defy Mother Nature.
If I told you I could teach you how to dance on water, how could you possibly say “no”? Surfing really connects you to nature and requires very little equipment. All you need is a board, and when you ride down the line of the wave it literally feels like you are standing on water. You feel a sense of awe and perspective.

5. Put the adrenaline of stress to use on a surfboard, not in your relationships.
Surfing awakes the animal instincts in us all. It is so rare in today’s society that we get to use those primal “fight or flight” skills in a good way! It’s a wonderful feeling to have your body charged with adrenaline and know exactly what to do with it. Many of our lives are filled with stress and worry and surfing is the perfect activity to flush all that adrenaline out of your system.

6. Surfing takes you places!
Many of the best waves around the world happen to be in paradise—Hawaii, Bali, Costa Rica and the Maldives to name a few. So let your new passion put stamps in your passport, and add some surfing-focused travel plans to your life. You’ll meet people from around the world. And after your surf session you can enjoy watching a sunset on the beach with a cocktail in your hand. That beats a locker room and smoothie for me. —Melisse Gelula
