Beach Blanket Barre Class: 3 toning moves you do on a towel

Beach towels aren't just for tanning, they're for toning. Master barre maven Shay Kostabi demos how to do it on your next beach trip.
Shay Kostabi Workout Moves 1Beach towels aren’t just for tanning, they’re for toning. (Especially if getting in a workout and a beach day is your idea of heaven.)

Here sunscreen-coated Shay Kostabi—master FlyBarre instructor newly based in Los Angeles—shares three toning exercises for abs, tush, and thighs, that you can do out of the studio and on the sand, whether you’re in Santa Monica (pictured), Southampton, or anywhere in between.

“All of these exercises are bikini friendly,” says Kostabi, and they also look pretty glamorous (versus revealing). “But just in case, bring a loose top or shorts to throw on while you’re getting your sweat on in the sand,” Kostabi advises. That way there’s also less sand-to-sweat stickiness. Also,”if you have a book, you can use it to smooth down your towel and make it more even and flat.”

Get Started
Shay Kostabi Workout Moves 3Plank Pulse

Start in high plank position, shoulders over wrists, body parallel to your towel. Draw navel in and lift one leg straight up, extending though toes and lift up two to three inches, repeatedly in a pulsing action. Try 30 seconds then switch to the other leg. Tip: Test the wind so you don’t put your face into the direction of blowing sand.

Start lying on one side, propped up on your forearm with shoulder stacked over the elbow and your core engaged. Cross the top leg over the bottom and lift the bottom leg three to four inches and pulse upwards. You can also make tiny circles with the working leg. Try 30 seconds then switch to the other side, while tossing your hair in the wind (optional).

Shay Kostabi Workout Moves 1High V Toe Tap Abs

Start by sitting upright and draw both knees in toward chest. Extend toes up on a high diagonal, creating a V shape with your torso and legs. Make sure your navel is pulled in and you have rocked off your sits-bones, creating a slight curve at the base of your spine. Extend your arms straight out, parallel to the ground, with palms up for balance. Tap the right toes down toward the sand, then switch. Try 30 alternating reps—then relax, you’re at the beach!
