Behind the scenes at Wanderlust Festival

1/17

Budakon2The Wanderlust Festival kicked off its third year in Stratton, Vermont yesterday. And Well+Good came to experience our first one ever (we had to check out the buzz), joining yoga and music lovers from all over the northeast, who poured into the adorable ski village for four days of non-stop superstar yoga.

What did we discover? Wanderlust is like summer camp for sophisticated yogis. You get to practice in stunning breezy venues, meet your yoga and spiritual heroes in a relaxed setting, and eat lots of organic food ($17 gluten-free kale pizza anyone?). Then at night the mood (and apparel) changes to groovy dance beats, and the Wanderlust Spectacular—a Cirque de Soleil-style show that will be at all the festivals this summer.

Here are the most inspiring photos we shot yesterday at Wanderlust Vermont.

All photos by Well+Good: Pictured, Cameron Shayne, the creator of Budokon, demos the flow of his yoga-meets-martial arts method.

Get Started
2/17
slide2_KiaMillerWest Coast yogi Kia Miller and Schuyler Grant, the founder of the Kula Yoga Project in New York, teamed up to teach Fire in the Belly: Teaching Naval Intelligence. We delved deep into the enteric nervous system (stay tuned for a story on the topic). Most classes feature a dedicated DJ and in many cases you can access the playlist afterwards.

4/17
Slide4_LululemonStoreLululemon has a huge presence, including a massive domed tent called cutely, D’Om. You can of course shop here, but there was also DJed music, an area to set intentions, places to lounge, as well as performances throughout the day.

5/17
Slide5_PurpleLuluPantLululemon debuted a line of co-branded Wanderlust apparel, plus reissues of many old favorites “from the vault.” The clothes will be sold at all the festivals this summer but not in the Lululemon stores.

6/17
Slide6_SuzanneKerryclass1Off the Mat founders Suzanne Sterling and Kerri Kelly co-taught Higher Ground named for the inner life work and social good that we all might do when we’re off our mats, as well as their non-profit organization. At one point everyone rolled up their mats and it turned into a dance party with DJ Drez.

7/17
Slide7_AnaForrestHigh priestess of healing yoga, Ana Forrest, made her Wanderlust debut, with a class called Stalking Your Fear. Her packed session was a morning mind-bender and body-opener. And her talk and book launch later in the day received rave reviews.

8/17
Slide8_TatooedwomanWhile the festival has a chic hippie vibe, there’s a huge range of people here. There are four-month olds and attendees well past retirement age. There are lots of people in head-to-toe Lululemon, and lots of cool, edgy types, and lots and lots of tattoos.

9/17
Slide9_HulaHoopsLike we said, Wanderlust is summer camp for yogis, including lots of hula hooping. Elemental Hoopdance is a popular offering and there are frequent Hoop Vinyasa performances around the mountain.

10/17
Slide10_DidgeThroughout the day, the lawns are filled with spontaneous jam sessions and performances like this one on the didgeridoo.

11/17
Slide11_HorseYogaYoga on Horses debuted this year at Wanderlust. Other unconventional yoga classes included stand up paddleboarding, slackline yoga (super popular), and yoga hikes. All of these immediately filled.

Slide12_Suzannekerry2Savasana was a super welcome pose during the 2-hour Wanderlust classes, which allow instructors lots of time to really create something special. As a result, they have a master-class vibe.

15/17
Slide15_MCYogiMC Yogi took the stage to much applause. The Northern California based hip-hop musician, who co-owns a studio with his yogi wife, calls himself a “working class mystic.”
