Swerve_3New York’s indoor cycling scene gets more diverse every day, and the newest spot to open its doors is differentiating itself by bringing teamwork into the spin studio for the first time.

Swerve Fitness kicks off its first classes this Saturday, in a 3,500-square-foot, two-story studio on 18th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues—right across from City Bakery, so you can work off those pretzel croissants fast.

The team behind the brand is focused on building a sense of camaraderie into every aspect of the space. “It really creates the opportunity for an individual to come in and potentially meet people. Or if you come with a group, you can compete together and then hang out afterwards,” says co-owner Eric Posner.

Get Started
2/6
Swerve_2The first floor of the space is home to the front desk, retail, and a large loungey space with key-code lockers, benches, and cafe tables. This is where you can visit the smoothie bar, which will sell post-workout blends, healthy snacks, and fresh juices from Liquiteria, and then chill with friends (old and new). Locker rooms are also on this level, with three showers for women and two for men.

3/6
Swerve_1The spin studio is in the basement, where 48 bikes are arranged on three levels, stadium style, with more space between them than you’re used to. (Yes!) The bikes are arranged in three groups that will represent the teams in class, and each area is lit up in its own color—blue, red, and green. When you book a bike, you’ll automatically be placed on a team (and if you’re coming with a group, you can book together).

Throughout class, you’ll generate an energy output number called your “Swerve score” that will be added to the others on your team and displayed on three flat screen TVs at the instructor’s discretion. It’s like your Torqueboard score at Flywheel, but with friends (and maybe enemies).

Owners describe the actual class style as “athletic and results-driven,” with lots of intervals. You can also expect light hand weights on bikes. So far, instructors include SLT’s Trisha Kinsman and former Equinox trainer Douglas Johnson.

4/6
Swerve_4Swerve’s retail area, directly across from the front desk when you enter, includes branded apparel from Alternative Apparel and Cory Vines, plus selections from Splits 59 and Phat Buddha.

5/6
Swerve_5Clip-in cycling shoes are included in the $30 single class price, and while you’ll have to pay for bottled water, a filtered water fountain is provided for refilling the eco version you brought from home. Bonus: A rewards program will track your class progress and award you with a free class after every 150 miles you pedal.
