Seems like running shoe designers took a cue from Hollywood in turning out sneakers that border on futuristic. And while you may not get a chance to test your spring-blade soles at the Elysium space station or your glow-in-the-dark webbed soles during an Oblivion alien war, you will look really cool while you work out.
Here are three futuristic running kicks to rock this fall… —Lisa Elaine Held
Launched on August 1, Adidas’ new running shoe looks like it’s made for a marathon on the moon. In place of a sole, it features 16 forward-angled polymer blades that compress and release energy as you move, creating a feeling of springing forward. According to the company, the design leads to highly effective energy return, propelling runners past competitors (especially since they’ll probably stop to stare). $180, www.adidas.com
Mizuno combined elements of its popular Wave Precision and Wave Elixir to create this funky shoe that launched in July and hugs your foot like a glove. It’s the brand’s lightest design to date. You can rock the wild patterned sneaker to PR during a 10K or to be the star of a intergalactic disco dance party. $120, www.zappos.com
This performance shoe from Puma is made for all kinds of cross training. It comes with a crazy-looking webbed exoskeleton (take that, aliens!), which is actually Webtech and Webcage technologies that provide your foot with flexible support. While the BioWeb launched last spring, this new edition comes in updated colors, violet and peach, and features another space-age characteristic—a glow-in-the-dark sole. $110, www.zappos.com
