Aside from an early flight to somewhere warm, there are not many things that can get me out of my bed at 5:45 a.m. Which is what makes Josh Arden, the uber-motivational instructor at Flywheel in New York City, one of the exceptions; he has me waking up with the sun not once, but three times a week.

What his class lacks in tropical drinks and sandy beaches, it more than makes up for in endorphin-pumping, pulse-raising, sweat-inducing energy. And the playlist is no slouch, either; on more than one occasion I’ve found myself singing along (sorry, bike neighbor!).

His style? “Early in the morning, I try not to slam people with loud and crazy pop remixes,” he says. Instead, each song is finely tuned to motivate you through the warm-up, climbs, and downhill sprints without being too peppy.
