Weekend Wellness Escape: Twin Farms, Vermont

There are healthy getaways that use austere surrounds and calorie-regulated meals to foster renewal. Twin Farms isn't one of them.

There are healthy getaways that use austere surroundings and calorie-regulated meals to foster renewal. Twin Farms isn’t one of them.

A visit here is more like a rejuvenation trip of a lifetime—rates start at $1,700 per night during the week, $1,900 on weekends in a suite in the main house. But those suites are about 1,000 square feet, and the rates are all-inclusive.

Really all-inclusive. They cover fantastic food, drinks, activities from biking to skiing (the 300-acre property has its own ski runs and chair lift), gratuities, rides to and from the airport, and some of the finest coddling I’ve ever received. Hiking boots scrubbed clean? A ride to my room that was 100 feet from the spa because it was drizzling? A taste of 2008 white pinot noir because I’d expressed enthusiasm for the 2009? Check, check, and check.

The Relais & Chateaux hotel is known primarily for being romantic—by all means, bring someone—and for having impeccably tricked-out cottages with different motifs. The 12 cottages (houses, really) range from the fishing-themed Perch to my favorites, the Moroccan fantasia Meadow and the sleek, glass-walled Aviary, which also has a sunken natural-stone hot tub in front of a fireplace in the bedroom.

There’s a game room full of tranquility-inducing Stave puzzles, a pub with a billiards table, and a Japanese-style soaking tub, but many guests barely even make it out of their rooms—which can be more rejuvenating than anything else.

Top three healthy highlights of our visit to Twin Farms:

The Out of the Woods Spa
Example A in the argument that bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to spas. Twin Farms’ sweet-little two-room spa is an all-time favorite because of its skilled, attentive therapists (mine remembered me from my visit six years ago) and luscious all-natural products from the cult UK line Arcania Apothecary.

Nine Miles of Hiking Trails
Nothing is too strenuous—I covered the whole trail system in less than three hours—but it’s head-clearingly beautiful, and you can always run (or snowshoe in winter). Once you’ve exhausted that, the very enthusiastic activities director can show you some great off-campus options.

Luxe Bath Products in the Guest Rooms
There’s a full kit of Arcania Apothecary products: hand wash, hand cream, day and night body wash and lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body oil, bath oil, and 2 bath foams. (All the rooms have huge window-fronting bathtubs; hence the emphasis on bathing.) The only downside: They’re environmentally friendly full-size bottles, meaning you can’t take your leftovers home. —Ann Abel
