Seeing the world’s greatest wonders in person is incredible, especially for wanderlusting avid travelers. But a negative side effect of frequently being regularly being on the road (aside from missing your furry friend, of course—pet separation anxiety is real!)? The homesickness. And that’s exactly why one pro traveler always packs one item that gives her much-needed comfort while she’s away: a candle.

“Burning a scent you’re familiar with while traveling is such an easy way to make you feel at home no matter where you are in the world.” —Jen Rubio, co-founder of Away

No matter how many things Jen Rubio, co-founder and chief brand officer of the chic suitcase brand Away, needs to fit in her carry-on for a given getaway, she always makes room for the items that make her feel cozy and secure during her travels. Aside from some Bose noise-canceling headphones and a Slip silk eye mask, she never leaves home without a candle for one important reason: “Burning a scent you’re familiar with while traveling is such an easy way to make you feel at home, no matter where you are in the world,” Rubio told Refinery29.

Not only will lighting a travel-friendly familiar scent remind you of home, but according to the Chopra Center, it can also help you relax and get rid of travel-induced stress and anxiety, since your body associates the aroma you’re sniffing with being in a state of calm.

With this simple addition to your packing list, you can have the best of both worlds: an exciting adventure and the comfort of home. Now, if only someone started making personalized dog-scented candles….

Here’s Karlie Kloss’ packing guide to carry-on travel. Also, here’s how to eat a plant-based diet while traveling.
