The Miami Boutique Fitness Scene Is Heating Up

With six new studios, it's easier to sweat (indoors) in Miami and Miami Beach than ever before. Here are the hottest workout destinations of the moment.

Barry's Bootcamp_Miami fitnessIt's a good thing a refreshing dip in the ocean is feasible year-round: The fitness scene is really heating up in Miami.

A slew of amazing boutique fitness studios and gyms have opened over the last few months, and more are coming this fall to join Miami's local born-and-raised hotspots like Green Monkey Yoga and national brands like Flywheel.

Barry’s Bootcamp and Exhale have put roots down in the South Florida city this year (and SoulCycle is slated to follow). It's also a good climate for new, indie studios like Pulse 163 and RedBike, offering a boutique vibe and buzzy instructors from "there's nothing here" North Beach to bustling Brickell.

Anatomy at 1220 Miami FitnessAnatomy at 1220

Crystal chandeliers, spiral staircases, and plush leather sofas usually scream uber-mansion not plain old gym. But Anatomy at 1220 is setting its sights on becoming Miami’s top luxury fitness and health center (hair and nail salon included). The sprawling 13,000 square foot space—in the heart of South Beach—is opening in mid October.

Anatomy will have classes from kickboxing to yoga, in addition to equipment staples like treadmills. But it'll also have some less expected offerings, like an on-site Miami Institute Fitlab, so you can get a battery of tests done, like 3D posture analysis and cardiac stress. It also joins a host of wellness spots in the area including Flywheel, JugoFresh, and Green Monkey.

Barre Motion Miami Fitness 2Barre Motion

The studio’s founder, Julie Jacko is a self-proclaimed barre addict, who also happens to hold a PhD in Human Factors Engineering. (We had to look it up, too.) So the new SoBe workout destination is somewhat of an amalgam: “Barre Motion is the perfect blend of science applied to the movement of the body,” says Jacko.

The studio opened in June with two classes—Signature and Advanced Motion—depending on how extensive your barre practice is. The glossy white space also has an outdoor patio for post-class lounging and is a hop, skip, and a jump from wellness-friendly neighbors like the relatively new Barry’s Bootcamp and Jugo Fresh.

Barry's Bootcamp MiamiBarry’s Bootcamp

Barry's Bootcamp, the supremely sweaty workout beloved by boutique fitness aficionados, opened in Miami Beach earlier this year.

The brand's butt-kicking method that mixes treadmill sprints and heavy-lifting intervals in an hour-long class is a favorite among New Yorkers, Angelenos, and celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Amanda Seyfried who can make it hard to nab a treadmill. Its first studio in Florida, with lockers, showers, and a FuelBar, is on par (space wise, maybe not vitamin D wise) with New York City's Chelsea locale.

LoewsMiamiBeach_Exhale_MiamiExhale

Exhale's second Miami location, in South Beach, opened in June at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel. The spa is complete with signature classes like Core Fusion barre and power yoga—and 16 treatment rooms for post-barre Power Facials and SpaRitual pedicures. Bonus: those pulsing at the barre in Miami have perks, too—such as frequently offered classes on the beach or poolside. (Jealous.)

Pulse 163_3_Miami FitnessPulse 163

This indie North Miami Beach barre studio just opened on September 2 and its classes—like barre, yoga, and cool combo offerings like PiYo (Pilates and yoga)—have been packed, say owners Melissa Grosfeld and Hilary Kates. There’s also a class named after Miami fitness guru, Julie Wiesman (called JBarre), the trainer of the moment who also teaches the white-hot Exhale Core Fusion.

The light and bright space (which thoughtfully stocks OnJuice) has solved a fitness commuting problem. “When you live in our area, it’s not uncommon to drive 20 miles to get a good class. We were laughing and thinking ‘I can’t believe we don’t have this closer to us,’” says Grosfeld, so the duo decided to create it themselves. Now residents can spend more time at the workout than driving to and from it.

Red Bike Miami FitnessRedBike

Miami's home-grown indoor cycling studio is RedBike, with 45-minute music-fueled rides. “The classes are like parties on a bike,” says Albert Ghitis, RedBike’s founder and one of the instructors. The classes look and sound more on par with a hair-whipping SoulCycle sesh than a torque-centric Flywheel ride.

The studio has a lounge area and sells juices by Cold Pressed Raw, a local Miami company, so you can sip and linger. The locker rooms have showers, so you can wash off the sweat before hitting the sand, or one of the nearby Brickell restaurants.
