The best slippers with arch support for women, at a glance

Why are slippers with arch support important?

“Good arch support is a must for any high-quality shoe, and slippers are no exception,” says Velimir Petkov, DPM, board-certified podiatrist and foot and ankle surgeon at Premier Podiatry, as it “cradles the arch and can prevent tendinitis and heel pain, which are some of the most common symptoms of collapsing arches.” Brad Schaeffer, DPM, board-certified foot surgeon and owner of Central Park Sole in New York City, agrees: “Arch support is the most important thing to look for when buying shoes.”

According to board-certified podiatrist and Vionic Innovation Lab member Jacqueline Sutera, DPM, supportive slippers can also prevent pain in other parts of the body, like the back, knee, and hips. “The feet are the foundation of the body,” she says, and because they bear the weight of our entire body—a pressure exacerbated whenever we stand, walk, or run—you want to wear the proper shoes to ensure they have the support needed for the job.

What to look for in arch-supportive slippers

Not all slippers are built the same, and the wrong pair can bring you more pain than pleasure. To ensure you select the right pair for you, there are a few considerations to think about as you shop for an option. “Like any shoe, you want a slipper that will not deform your feet and one that will allow your feet to move and function properly,” says board-certified podiatrist Alissa Kuizinas, DPM. With this in mind, “a firm-soled slipper that bends properly at the ball of the foot and has a wide toe box is your best bet,” she says.

Gregory Alvarez, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified podiatrist at Ankle & Foot Centers of America, agrees that “a thick and firm sole” is ideal, and he also recommends looking for options made from materials like memory or latex foam for additional cushioning and support. He adds that slippers with removable arch-support insoles can also provide wearers with support and can easily be replaced when needed—or when they start to wear out. Dr. Schaeffer echoes, “I recommend my patient use insoles like Dr. Scholl’s Orthotic Insoles ($13) in their shoes for extra arch support, especially if shoes come with a flat factory-made insole.”

Additionally, Dr. Petkov recommends slippers with soft, insulating, and comforting uppers, “so that a person can comfortably slip into them without worrying about the width or height of their foot.” Dr. Kuizinas also suggests looking for an option that conforms to your feet. It’s a plus if the slippers feature a strap to keep them tightly fastened, and “so that your feet do not have to grip to hold the slipper in place as you walk,” she says.

Of course, you’ll also want to keep your preferences in mind as you shop. If your feet get hot, you may want slippers that are made for sweaty feet, which are typically made from lightweight or sweat-wicking fabrics, but if they run cold, options made with wool, fleece, or faux fur can help keep your feet warm.

Who should use slippers with arch support?

According to Dr. Schaeffer: “Everyone can benefit from proper support.” Plus, wearing slippers at home can help you protect your feet in the long run. “Wearing slippers and limiting the time spent barefoot can help prevent and slow down the ‘fat pad atrophy’ of the feet,” says Dr. Sutera. “Once this happens later in life, you’re basically walking around on skin and bones.” (Ouch.)

What about orthopedic slippers?

If you are someone with issues such as arthritis or chronic pain that limits foot movement, you might want to consider using orthopedic slippers, says Dr. Kuizinas. Orthopedic slippers are specifically made to wear comfortably and with arch support in mind. “They are typically made with arch support, and generally have a relatively stiff sole,” she says.

Frequently asked questions

What are the features of supportive slippers?

According to the podiatrists we spoke to, supportive and comfortable slippers typically feature adequate arch support for the foot, roomy toe boxes, firm-yet-flexible soles, upper that is comfortable enough for the feet to easily slip into after a long day, and as a bonus, adjustable straps that offer wearers the ideal fit.

Is more or less arch support ideal for flat feet?

Dr. Schaeffer typically recommends that people with flat feet wear slippers that have more—and not less—arch support, as this will help decrease pressure on the feet, he says.

What is an appropriate slipper for flat feet?

For those with flat feet, the ideal slipper will offer an ideal amount of cushioned support—and if, in addition to flat feet, wearers have foot pain, they may want to opt for orthopedic slippers, according to Dr. Kuizinas.
