The news cycle during the past few months has been dominated by a harrowing number of #MeToo stories, highlighting unwanted sexual encounters that have taken place in yoga studios, the entertainment world, the workplace, and beyond. But with Time recently naming “the silence breakers” as its people of the year and the just-released 2018 Golden Globe nominations celebrating athletic boss babes featured onscreen this year, it’s clear that there’s at least hope for progress.
While plenty of great contenders made the nomination list (hello, Ladybird and This Is Us!), it was also a great year for critically acclaimed badass female athletes to get recognized. Here are three must-see movies and shows to watch before the Golden Globes’ January 7 broadcast.

1. I, Tonya
The story line in I, Tonya—starring Margot Robbie—feels almost too wild to be real, but here, reality is stranger than fiction. The flick follows the scandal of Tonya Harding, the ice-skater-turned-villain who might have been behind her competition’s (Nancy Kerrigan) knee getting clubbed before the Olympics in the ’90s. According to Time, Harding’s ex-husband was the one who paid the attacker to target Kerrigan.

2. Battle of the Sexes
This flick—which stars Emma Stone and Steve Carrell—takes a deep dive into the true story behind Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs’s highly publicized showdown in front of 90 million people worldwide. And it’s safe to say Stone kills it as King—but there will be no spoilers here about who actually won the game. (Although you probably have a good idea.)

3. Glow
If you’re a frequent Netflix binge-watcher, there’s a good chance you saw the original series Glow starring Alison Brie, who got in the best shape of her life while prepping for the role. In the show, Brie’s character—who’s a struggling actress—becomes part of the female wrestling league Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.) in hopes of kick-starting her life in the limelight. And it turns out the series was inspired by a 2012 documentary about the real thing: badass female wrestlers.
