Amazon’s next step in global domination: 30-minute-meal kits

When Amazon purchased Whole Foods last month, it became immediately clear that Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos was ready to invest—like seriously invest, to the tune of $13.7 billion—in the food industry.

The next step in Amazon’s plan to take over your kitchen: branded meal kits.

No word yet on whether Amazon will offer up expanded dietary-specific choices for its dairy-free, gluten-intolerant, or Paleo-loving consumers.

Amazon Fresh already offers a selection of meal kits with partners Martha & Marley Spoon and Tyson Tastemakers, but now Amazon is releasing 17 of its own branded boxes—and they sound pretty good. The earliest selections include chicken tikki masala, tacos al pastor, veggie burgers with smoked eggplant, and a veggie quinoa bowl with spiced chickpeas (yum!), Food & Wine reports. (There are carnivore-friendly and vegetarian options, FYI. And some ingredients, like Pacific Foods chicken stock, are organic, but not all.)

The Amazon meals are only available in select cities right now, including Seattle and New York city (check here to see if they’re offered where you are), and they’ll run you around $20 for a two-serving box—which is comparable to competitors like Blue Apron and Hello Fresh. They’re designed to go from box to table in 30 minutes, and all come with complete nutrition information and an ingredient list. (Though, as one GeekWire writer reports, the boxes also come with a little too much packaging.)

No word yet on when the meal kits will launch nationwide—or whether Amazon will offer up expanded dietary-specific choices for its dairy-free, gluten-intolerant, or Paleo-loving consumers.
