Going to the gym on a regular basis is one thing—but when you have an active lifestyle in general, you'll likely reap even more healthy benefits in the long run. But, the big struggle to kick-starting this way of life for yourself? It's easier to see out in some places than in others.

WalletHub looked at 100 of the biggest US cities and, based 34 key indicators of an active lifestyle (from the cost of  gyms to bike use and accessibility), ranked the top performing metropolises. Ultimately, one place in particular shot to the top of the list: Chicago.

Chicago ranked first for having increased access to sports and the outdoors, which involves having plenty of tennis courts and fitness centers, just being super walkable, and more.

The Midwestern city ranked first for having increased access to sports and the outdoors, which involves having plenty of tennis courts and fitness centers, just being super walkable, and more. Portland, Oregon, came in second place, likely due to its low percentage of physically inactive adults, followed by San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle. While these exercise-friendly cities topped the list, others weren't so suitable for workout warriors: Hialeah, Florida, came in last with North Las Vegas, Nevada; Irving, Texas; Bakersfield, California; and Newark, New Jersey, rounding out the bottom.

So if you're looking for a city with an infrastructure that caters to you reaching your daily step goals, Chicago might be your best bet. And because it's also becoming a hub for healthy food start-ups, you're sure to be well fed, too.
