Ask most women to tally up the number of tubes and pots they've gone through on the quest to find their go-to (and might I add: ever-changing) look and you're likely to get a sly eye. Because after the first dozen or so trips to Sephora or Ulta, chances are they've lost count. It's understandable: There's a lot to test from contouring and highlighting powders to winged liners and bold brows. One thing you can rest assured she's nailed? Lipstick.
Of all the cosmetics, it's one of the most versatile items and Ashlee Glazer, makeup artist and Laura Geller’s Global Artistic Director says that it's also a one-way ticket to feeling good in your own skin. “The overall feel of beauty this year is empowering and inclusive for all," she says. "Runway trends are universally flattering and easily to accomplish.” Meaning: There's a shade for everyone. And with bold colors like greens, navys, and midnight blacks coming to a tube near you, there really is a rainbow to choose from. Here, she breaks down the hues that you'll be seeing a lot more of throughout the rest of 2018.

“This year, the classic red lip is bolder, with a super strong pigment, as opposed to a stain or ombre. This look is flattering on everyone as red is ageless and timeless," she tells me. "Look for an orange-based hue if you have warmer olive, deeper skin tones, and a blue-based cherry lip if you are porcelain, fair, or medium. There is a shade that works on everyone.” For full-fledged pigment, try the BareMinerals Statement Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Fire ($19); it's a liquid that's easy to maneuver until it dries into place and then it holds steady until you're ready for it to come off.
“Metallic hues have made their way to the lips and cheeks as the perfect way to top off your look. This can be trendy on anyone—it just depends on how far you take it," she says. "For a more mature look, choose a metallic with a glossy finish to illuminate the skin. For something a bit more fun, pair metallic lips with equally shiny eyes and cheeks." What's more? Many metallics such as this Rituel de Fille Forbidden Lipstick in Shadow Self ($24) come in cool colors such as green, navy, and purple, so you can freshen up your lipstick hue and its finish.
“Soft watercolor washes of pink from last year are graduating to bright bold pops of color this year, as seen on Jessica Biel and Emma Stone at the Golden Globes," Glazer says. "This bright, fun hue is a perfect pop on the skin and doesn’t require much else.” RMS Beauty Wild With Desire in Sweet Nothing ($28) comes in hot with a fuchsia that works for all due to its neutral undertones that sing on warm and cool skin tones alike.
“I love lip-gloss!" Glazer exclaims. "This trend is a personal throwback to my high-school days of using MAC lip gloss and being obsessed with the glaze it gave lips. My favorite way to play with a glossy lips is to brighten and highlight facial features with an equally shiny face gloss.” To nail the look, either pick a clear gloss or one with a hint of tint to be worn alone or over other hues such as Vapour Organics Elixir Plumping Gloss in Flirt ($24).
“Nude is always sexy and perfect for anyone," Glazer says. "Whether you’re wearing a brighter eye or a classic cat eye, a nude lip is the best way to complete a look.” Try Ilia Lipstick in Funnel of Love ($26).
Now that you've got down the trends, here's why red lipsticks are *so* hard to formulate and this is why you'll be seeing more bold hues in lipsticks this year.
