This Unicorn Smoothie Recipe Has a Gut-Friendly Boost

Your morning smoothie has plenty of vitamins and minerals, thanks to the variety of fruits and veggies you pack into your blender. But there’s an additional area your favorite bev might not be covering: Gut health.

And guess what? It’s an easy fix. Nutritionists in the know are fans of BIOHM Super Greens because the powder contains a variety of good-for-you greens such as spirulina, kale, spinach, and broccoli, but also ingredients that could help benefit your gut.

“Super greens are kind of like a salad on steroids,” says Aubrey Phelps, RDN. “And this one is particularly interesting because it not only contains a wide variety of these actual greens, but also a great probiotic and prebiotic blend—and it tastes great.”

Here's why you might want to add super greens ("like salad on steroids") to your next smoothie.

That blend, packed with digestive enzymes, is designed to help break down digestive plaque, AKA buildup that can accumulate in your gut and affect the balance of good bacteria and good fungi. “This helps the body truly absorb and utilize the good bacteria and good fungi being introduced and will help maintain the total microbiome,” Phelps says.

Since the powder includes greens (as well as the added probiotic and antioxidant dosage), you can really get creative with your other smoothie add-ins. Hence, the unicorn smoothie: Phelps' own creation featuring colorful ingredients like beets, which are said to provide immunity-boosting vitamin C, fiber, and potassium.

PSA: Not only is it a nutrient-filled sip, but the vibrant mason-jar creation should rack up a lot of Instagram likes, too.

Smoothie
1 cup pre-shredded raw beets
1 cup frozen raspberries
½ cup frozen strawberries
½ cup frozen cherries
6+ oz. water (increase as needed for your desired consistency)

Super Cream

2. Blend all smoothie ingredients together on high until smooth.

3. Drizzle the side of your cup with super cream.

4. Pour in the smoothie and top with any desired add-ons and the rest of super cream.
