Class Action: SLT Yoga

For those who want to get their yoga on without having to utter a single Om, there's just launched SLT Yoga, which stands for Strengthen, Lengthen, and Tunes.

Fitness classes follow fashion. The city’s gyms and studios constantly launch new “It” classes. In Class Action we dish on what we’re trying, or what we really want to. And please tell us what classes you’re excited about in the Comments section, below!

SLT Yoga

Yoga can be intimidating for first-timers: Sanskrit, Om-ing, and pretzel-like practitioners.

For those who want to get their yoga on without having to utter a single Om, there's just launched SLT Yoga, the brainchild of Erin Jacques, an exercise physiologist and former director of exhale’s yoga program.

We found it refreshing that Jacques comes across more as a girlfriend than a guru. How many yoga teachers call their students "dollface" while providing delicate adjustments? She leads a fast-paced hour-long vinyasa class that had us sweating on the Tiffany-turquoise mats, which match the walls.

The signature volume-11 playlist of rock and pop has more in common with a spin class than a yoga class. The method name refers to Strengthen, Lengthen, and Tunes. (It's a word away from its sister Megaformer workout next door, SLT, that was created by Amanda Freeman, also the co-founder of Vital Juice).

We left SLT Yoga feeling stretched, supple, and sweaty, having clocked a bootcamp-worthy number of push-ups and lunges. It's the perfect yoga class for Type-A exercisers. Our only quibble is that it's hard to hear the instructor over the loud music, even when she's mic-ed.

Who’s it for: Boutique fitness junkies who want to throw some yoga in the mix. Yoga skeptics. Yogis looking for a power hour.
