Smart toothbrushes are like fitness trackers for your mouth. They tell you how to improve your brushing, allow you to earn points for rewards, and help you log how often and how long you're brushing. According to a survey of 40,000 people, the Hum by Colgate Smart Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush is the best electric toothbrush on the market.

Product of the Year USA, conducted by consumer research company Kantar, recently announced 41 winners from its 2021 national survey results. Forty thousand American shoppers voted on everything from the best dish soap to the best yogurt.

The Colgate Hum was voted the best electric toothbrush. Here's why—first, it connects to an app on your phone through Bluetooth. The app guides you through your brushing experience, showing you which areas to hit and when, and any spots that you missed. Each brushing session is timed, allowing you to stick to the two-minute rule with ease.

Sonic vibrations from the Hum allow for a thorough yet customizable clean—choose from normal, sensitive, or deep clean to get the vibration mode that works best for you.

This brush comes in three colors: blue, purple, and teal. It comes with a charger and a travel case. The battery will keep a charge for 10 days, meaning you don't have to store it on the charger, freeing up precious counter space.

If $70 for a toothbrush isn't in your budget right now, you can opt for the battery-powered version of the Hum for $40. Just note that you'll have to continue purchasing batteries.

Just as you'd change out your regular toothbrush every three to four months, you should ensure you're doing the same with your electric brush head. Both brushes come with the option to buy two replacement brush heads for $10, or subscribe and receive a new brush head every three months for $5 each.

“When you don’t change your brush in the recommended amount of time, the bristles can become frayed. Frayed bristles are less effective in removing plaque and food debris around the teeth,” says dentist Inna Chern, DDS. “Less effective plaque removal can lead to excess bacteria in the mouth, which causes bad breath.” She adds that the increase in bacteria can also lead to issues like gingivitis.
