I have a love-hate relationship with under-eye patches. As someone with super dry skin, I love how these patches deliver a hyper dose of hydrating ingredients directly to my delicate under-eye skin. But, I don't love that they're single-use and come in single-use plastic packaging to keep them wet. Then, I came across reusable eye masks from Consonant Skin+Care and knew my conundrum had come to an end.
The Consonant Reusable Silicone Eye Mask is designed to turn your favorite eye cream or eye-friendly mask or serum into a mask.
When using the reusable eye masks, all you have to do is dab your product of choice on your under-eye area and cover with the mask. Although other eye patches you're used to may be sopping wet, you don't want to add too much product with these because that can cause the mask to slide around on your face. Plus, with the way the mask works, you won't need it.
S. Tyler Hollmig, MD, director of dermatologic surgery at The University of Texas at Austin, explains that when you layer something—in this case, the eye mask—over a skin-care product it will make the active ingredients penetrate deeper. It's a process derms use clinically all the time.
"The skin is an incredibly great barrier. It's good at its job; it keeps things out, including many medicines," Dr. Hollmig says. "And so if you just put a topical medicine on the skin, you'll probably get some absorption and some effectiveness. If you put a topical product on the skin and then occlude it, meaning put a wrap around it, put some sort of barrier that would prevent evaporation, that would pin it close to the skin so more of it gets in."
Considering that these masks will intensify the efficacy of the ingredients in your skin care, it's recommended you pair them something gentle and hydrating, like the Consonant Pure Unscented HydrExtreme Serum This serum is packed with water-loving ingredients glycerin and Cassia Angustifolia seed and when I tried it, left my skin feeling dewy and nourished.
These reusable eye masks feel a bit heavier than single-use versions but were still super comfortable to use. Once you're done masking, just wash them off with a gentle soap (your face cleanser will do the trick) and let them fully air dry before placing them back in the reusable jelly pouch.
For just $20, these patches that you can reuse dozens and dozens of times cost the same as two or three single-use under-eye masks. And knowing that I have 24/7 access to reusable under-eye masks feels amazing.
