Sensitive skin can be a real drag. Red, itchy, flakiness is uncomfortable at best, and yet studies estimate that up to 70 percent of us are dealing with some form of sensitivity. Sensitive skin can be difficult to treat, but there’s now a new tool in the arsenal that doesn’t even have to come into contact with your skin in order to heal it: Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool.

Dyson’s air purifier-humidifier hybrid has earned the distinction of being the first machine recognized by the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) as a treatment for people with psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, severe sensitive skin, and even joint mobility issues (which can result from psoriasis).

“People who experience psoriasis or severely sensitive skin can deal with a wide range of impactful symptoms,” says Stacie Bell, PhD, chief scientific and medical officer at the National Psoriasis Foundation. “Someone with itchy, irritated, flaky skin could benefit from a device that helps control the air quality and humidity.” The machine does just that, while also lowering high temps which can trigger skin conditions such as eczema, too.

Board-certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD elaborates on why this works. For starters, air pollution, he says, negatively impacts skin and is associated with worsening of conditions like psoriasis and eczema (premature aging and acne flares, too). “Removing pollution from the hair can help the skin barrier function optimally, because it is not constantly exposed to free radical damage caused by particulate matter,” he says. And according to board-certified dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD, the home can contain up to five times more pollutants than the outside air.dyson pure humidify cool

Humidity, or a lack thereof it, can play a significant role in the skin’s ability to protect itself from the environment, says Dr. Zeichner. “Low humidity means that the skin barrier is stressed causing microscopic cracks, loss of hydration, and inflammation,” he says. “Low humidity poses the biggest problems in patients who already have a weakened skin barrier, like in conditions like eczema or rosacea.”

Typical treatments include moisturizers, creams, shampoos, steroids, dietary restrictions, and more. And while the Dyson is no miracle cure, it offers a soothing solution you can uniquely set and forget. In this way, it’s a first in the field.

With its triple-threat capabilities, this machine is also a first for Dyson, and it has other cool features, too. For starters, it automatically adjusts to detected air pollution or lowered humidity, so you don’t have to worry about tinkering with it. It’s also been designed to destroy 99 percent of water bacteria, which can become a problem with some humidifiers. And it features a deep clean cycle that takes care of the cleansing process with one button which is a huge relief for those who’ve struggled with maintaining humidifiers or purifiers regularly.

Real talk, though: This impressive technology does not come cheap. If you divide the price by it’s three different functions and add in the money you may save on some other sensitive skin treatments, though… well, it may still not be cheap, but it’s definitely an exciting option that will do both you and your home good. And if you can’t spring for it just yet, Dr. Zeichner says any (high-quality) humidifier or air purifier can help.
