The Surprising Workout Routine That Got Emma Stone Prepped for “La La Land”

It clearly takes incredible stamina—and skill!—to tap-dance your way around Los Angeles with Ryan Gosling at your side. (Sigh, if that were your only obstacle.)

Emma Stone proved she could do it with grace, as those who saw the hit Oscar-nominated film La La Land know. But it turns out that the secret behind Stone's dancer frame is actually massive weights.

As revealed in The Daily Mail, she hit the gym with Jason Walsh, founder of workout studio Rise Nation (you know, the one with the cardio climber machine that celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Hilary Duff swear by). And it just so happens that his most reliable, go-to exercise for all-around fitness is the deadlift.

"I discovered I have deep-seated rage when I'm holding heavy weights over my head."

"It's a complex movement that incorporates every major muscle group working together," says Walsh. "It's very important."

Stone was actually really into the move. "I discovered I have deep-seated rage when I'm holding heavy weights over my head," says Stone. "Whatever dormant anger I have in me, that's where it comes out. That's not the kind of working out I want to do… I'm usually a pretty peaceful person, but for some reason when I get in the gym something bubbles up in me."

Hey, maybe next time you're in the mood to take out some frustrations, try lifting rather than boxing—you may discover your stress-relief solution involves a pair of 10 pounders.
