What inspired you to become a trainer?
My dad spent his career coaching, and is the one who first recognized my own potential and encouraged my growth as an athlete and a person. He also taught me that being a great coach means caring about people first. I watched him be a mentor and a friend to the athletes that he coached, building lifelong relationships with many of them.
“Being a great coach means caring about people first.”
As a trainer, it’s obviously important to have the skills and technical knowledge pertaining to fitness and athletic development. But to be a great trainer, you have to care for people.
What’s your fitness philosophy?
Often, I program something that looks to be impossible or a client sets a goal that seems unreachable. The first thing I say is, “Let’s just try it.” I’m not looking for perfection, I’m just looking for effort. And 99.9 percent of the time, you’re able to exceed your expectations.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about being a fitness pro?
Being a fitness professional means being a part of people’s lives. Coaching, training, programming is all to be expected, but you spend a lot of time with them so it’s natural that your relationship deepens to much more than just health.
The winner of America’s Most Inspiring Trainer will score a one-year contract with Reebok and major coverage on Well+Good. Cast your vote now!
