New Yorkers love Barre3, streaming the workouts on their laptops and phones, and flocking to annual pop-up classes with founder Sadie Lincoln that never seem to be offered often enough. But now the cool, yoga-inspired barre brand that’s based in Portland, Oregon, is finally opening a flagship studio in New York. “It’s been a goal of ours for years,” says Barre3’s Amy Leclerc. “But finding the right location in Manhattan has been challenging.” (Yet they’ve been able to expand to 40-plus studios across the country.)
Barre3’s West Village studio is slated to open in late March, and will occupy a sunny, second-floor spot on the corner of Sixth Avenue and 8th Street, a location recently storied as the new Liquiteria. (And former Gray’s Papaya.) Will we come to know 6 West 8th Street as “the hub of health?”
Instead of seeking a franchise partner, the new Manhattan outpost is operated and owned by Barre3 (along with Miguel McKelvey, the co-founder of WeWork, who is Lincoln’s brother). And as a demonstration of their seriousness about wow-ing New Yorkers “who’ve got lots of barre options,” they’re relocating their master instructor Meegan Gregg here. “She’s a star instructor who regularly has a waitlist in Portland,” says Leclerc.
The studio will include lots of clean and modern design elements, eco-friendly materials, and while it won’t have child care, like the West Coast studios, it will have plenty of seats for sipping your post-workout smoothie from downstairs. —Melisse Gelula
