I’ve tested my fair share of leggings—I am a beauty and fitness writer, after all. After sweating, walking, running, and stretching in a variety of styles and brands, Rise Cropped Sleep Leggings in TENCEL Modal from Gap are my new favorite pants—and they're only $35. I work from home in an apartment with my husband and I usually sit cross-legged on the couch to work. I’ve had trouble in the past with other leggings not being stretchy enough. These pants aren’t tight or restricting, and hours will pass by and I’ll still feel totally comfortable even in my not-so-great-for-my-posture position.

After wearing them to work from home, I’ll throw them in the laundry because they are machine washable. (I’m #blessed with an in-home washer and dryer in New York City, a true luxury.) Then, despite having 42 different pairs of workout/athleisure pants in my closet—I’m not kidding, I counted—l’ll put these back on for a workout on my Peloton. They are just so comfortable and easy to wear. I love the higher cut waist that keeps everything in place, which I especially appreciate after having a C-section with my daughter. It also ensures they don’t fold or roll down, even if I’m doing a strength or HIIT workout and doing a lot of twisting and turning.

These are technically called “sleep leggings,” and they are soft and cozy enough to do just that. As I said above, they aren’t too tight, and they feel nice and breathable, so they are perfect for lounging or sleeping. Even though they can be pajamas, they don’t *look* like pajamas, and that’s key for me when I have to answer the door to get my dinner delivery or walk my dog outside.

I also love the length. I have wider calves and sometimes full-length workout pants can be restricting, too tight, and very uncomfortable. I’m also only 5’2”, so I don’t need any extra length. These hit at the perfect spot, above the ankle. The capri cut also makes them great to wear all year round.

They come in charcoal gray and true black, from sizes XXS to XXL. Reviewers love them, too—they currently have a 5-star rating. They are made with 93 percent Tencel Modal, which Gap says is “a wood-based fiber produced from trees harvested from sustainable forests where 99 percent of the raw material comes from certified or controlled sources.”

You can’t get a more comfortable and versatile pair of leggings for under $40, in my opinion. I can’t imagine these will stay in stock long, so scoop them up (in both colors like I did) right now.
