My Favorite Green Juice Recipe: Metta Murdaya

Metta Murdaya making Kunir Asem with “jamu-makers” in Bali.

Metta Murdaya is the co-founder of Juara, a spa-like, Indonesian-inspired beauty range that taps the power of the archipelago’s plants, herbs, and spices.

Murdaya’s been adding turmeric to facial masks and anti-aging serums before it was trendy. Ditto her juices or jamu, Indonesian health drinks based on medicinal herbs.

One of the New Yorker’s faves is turmeric-tamarind blend called Kunir Asem. (Kunir means turmeric, and Asem means tamarind.)

“I drink it for health maintenance,” she says. “The turmeric is cleansing and has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, and tamarind helps with digestion.” The green element in this tropical elixir? The lime!

Kunir Asem

1/2 tsp crushed turmeric
1/2 tsp crushed tamarind
1 cup water (add more to dilute)
1 slice lime
1 pinch salt
Coconut palm sugar to taste

Mash the turmeric, then add tamarind. Add water until you get desired strength. (You can experiment with this.) Stir until fully mixed. Strain pulp (optional), and add palm sugar to taste. Add lime and salt.
