Running shoes take center stage at the Chanel couture show

Pairing your rad sneakers with a designer ensemble just got a thumbs up. Karl Lagerfeld debuts luxe lace-up sneakers at the Chanel couture show this week.
Chanel couture Paris Spring 2013 running shoes sneakers If you were uncertain about pairing your rad sneakers with your new Net-A-Porter ensemble, there’s no reason to hold back now.

The Spring 2014 Chanel couture show in Paris on Monday featured running shoes with all 63 looks, including classic Chanel tweed suits, evening gowns, and even a wedding dress (worn by of-the-moment British model Cara Delevigne).

Of course, these weren’t your average gym shoes or designer wedges. All of the Chanel sneakers used couture materials like silk, tweed, and eyelet lace to match their looks. In other words, they don’t breathe, wick, or seem likely to withstand your Barry’s Bootcamp workout.

But with so many women already blending their fitness looks with high fashion, and more designers catering to them (Isabel Marant, 3.1 Philip Lim, and more), the fashion house that created the elegant ballet flat is affirming that that sportier shoes can also be chic. Get Started
Chanel 2 A Chanel (couture) crop top, corseted waist, and feathered skirt. Does this mean that starlets will be sporting sneaks on the red carpet this award season?

Chanel 3 A sweet rainbow-hued suit with matching elbow and knee pads, fanny pack, and sneakers (of course). This makes us wish that someone would design a roller-rink-based workout.

Chanel 4 Voluminous shoulders and a midi skirt in eyelet lace. And yes, the sneakers are eyelet lace as well. (So maybe not the best choice for outdoor boot camp.)

Chanel 5 The finale featured Karl Largerfeld’s darling Cara Delevigne as the ultimate modern bride. Sneaks for shoes and a feather veil? It doesn’t get much more new age than that.
