If you’re a regular gym-goer, it can start to feel like your default hair style is a ponytail or top knot. But if you put your hair-ties down and think about it, a style that meets the paramount criteria of “long enough to pull it back” is not your only option.

Ready for something that says “it girl meets working woman” for when you’re not breaking a sweat?

To learn what hair trends are hot right now, we asked the brand-new Broome Street Society salon in Manhattan, which happens to be filled with super seasoned stylists and colorists with a downtown vibe.

And we got some great news (especially for those gym-hair concerns): “Next-day hair is a major win this season,” says Broome Street’s senior stylist and Balayage artist, Jay Vosper. So you can put those hot styling tools down for the moment.

Read on to see the top three cut and color trends of fall 2016.

1. Modern shag with a heavy fringe

This fall is all about natural texture. The fringed shag (AKA a shag with thick bangs) takes the curling wand-styled lob that we’ve seen all over Pinterest for the last two years into a modern, customized shape for both shorter and longer lengths. A fringe is an effective way to take a summer look into fall by framing the face and creating more structure…and by adding shaggy layers to a one-length cut, more volume and texture is created without the need for a lot of styling with hot tools. Scrunching in some texturizing spray like Oribe Apres Beach Waves almost always does the trick. Next-day hair is a major win this season. —Jay Vosper, senior stylist and Balayage artist

2. ’70s style center part with low crown volume

We are doing a lot of 1970s-inspired center parts that feature natural texture and volume within the mid-lengths and ends (but not so much at the crown). Diffusing is the go-to method of styling to create the look, using a curling texture creme like R+Co Twister. And without a whole lotta fuss or heat styling, this style is a major bonus for the woman on the run. —Josie Sanchez, creative director, stylist/owner

3. Hair color is going deeper, richer, and shinier

For fall, beach-y summer highlights and light Balayage ends are deepened and we’re adding more tone-on-tone, which adds reflection and shine. Chocolate and caramels are the go-to hues for brunettes and blondes, and auburn for strawberry hues. Hair color is like makeup—it’s important to enhance the skin’s complexion by bringing out a glow through hair color. —Andrea Hans, executive director, stylist/owner
