Gwyneth Paltrow and wellness are practically synonymous at this point thanks to goop, her healthy cookbook It’s All Good, and her well-known standing dance cardio date with Tracy Anderson.
And this year the actor-author-entrepreneur secured her healthy reputation on the natural beauty scene, too, by joining Juice Beauty as Creative Director of Makeup, and launching a non-toxic 78-piece Phyto-Pigments Color collection.
And it’s not just lip(stick) service: “People are really understanding how absorbent an organ the skin is….how applying toxic chemicals on our skin is not good for us,” says Paltrow. Green juice, it turns out, is not enough for amazing skin. Though it helps. (Ditto, some happy-making dance cardio.)
So what does her beauty bag look like these days?
Sitting down to chat with Paltrow about her favorite products and beauty practices (including the more out-there ones—stay tuned!), she’s buzzing with her newest score, a cleansing balm that she’s been “road-testing for her upcoming skin care collection for goop, which launches in March”—and she’s supremely happy with the resulting glow. These are the five natural beauty products and practices Gwyneth Paltrow swears by right now…
It has coconut! I had sat in makeup chairs for years and been slathered with lots of toxins and chemicals, so for me the primer and foundation were incredibly important because that covers the most surface area. We went back and forth and back and forth [on this product]. I brought in the best primer I had ever used [as a goal], and ours I think is the best primer on the market now.
2. The Tracy Anderson Method
I’m like a broken record, but I’ve been doing Tracy Anderson for 10 years. I literally worship. Sometimes I do a boxing class because my shrink tells me it’s good to do once in awhile, but [Tracy] works so well for me that I just don’t mess with it. I don’t think about it as cardio. It takes awhile to learn all the bits of choreography, but once you know it and feel confident with the steps and they’re blasting Beyonce and you’re all dancing, you don’t even think, Uh, I’m exercising. I get swept up in it and the hour goes like that [snaps her fingers]. What’s funny, with my heart rate monitor, when a song comes on that I love, I burn twice as many calories.
This, says Paltrow, is the most interesting/crazy beauty treatment she’s tried recently: “They take teensy acupuncture needles with vitamins and inject the surface of your skin with them. I was like, what the heck? It didn’t even hurt that much, but it just seemed weird. My skin looked really glowy for a number of days, I have to tell you.”
4. Eating from the inside out
If you go on goop, we just did a whole month of detox and eating from the inside out. I really try to take care of myself. I’ll try to sleep. I try to drink a lot of water. I exercise five days a week. I take my shakes and my spirulina and all my superfoods. But I also really like my French fries and martinis, so there’s always a balance I’m working with. I believe in not depriving yourself of anything, but that you eat good nutrition every day where possible.
I love the mascara. Conventional mascara is, I want to say, the most toxic product you can buy. So to be able to create mascara that’s all-natural and really works, and you can build it up…it’s really, really hard to do. Usually it’s full of carbon black, which is a petroleum byproduct. They crush up all kinds of crazy things in mascara, so I’m really proud of [ours].
