How To Make Your Own Matcha Latte at Home in Just 5 Minutes

Fall is just around the corner, which means we're about time to embark on one of the most important autumnal rituals: switching over from iced drinks to hot. Goodbye, cold brew, hello, drip coffee and matcha lattes. But with coffee shops a bit harder to access during COVID-19, you might be wondering how to make a matcha latte at home. There are a variety of techniques out there for reaping the antioxidant benefits of the tea, but chef (and matcha expert) Candice Kumai has a great recipe that's super easy to whip up at home. Along with the matcha, you'll need coconut manna or coconut butter (which she says you can find online or in health-food stores), hot water, and almond milk. Easy, peasy. Fall has never tasted better. 

A good matcha latte is one of the best simple pleasures in life...until you get to the price. Thankfully, there are lots of ways to make a café-quality matcha latte at home—something that I'm very passionate about!

Traditionally, you make matcha with a chasen (a bamboo whisk) and 175-185 degree Fahrenheit water. In this recipe, you are going to "whisk" your matcha in a Vitamix (or any other high-speed blender). It works surprisingly well, as long as you keep the power level low to avoid splashing and accidents. You'll have a delicious, piping-hot matcha latte in around five to six minutes—less time than it takes to walk to the coffee shop and wait for your order.

Creamy coconut matcha latte

Yields 2 lattes


2 teaspoons high quality matcha
2 cups just-under boiling water (175-185 degrees F)
1-2 tablespoons coconut manna or coconut butter
1/4 cup almond milk (unsweetened is best)
Sweetener, if desired (to taste)

1. Place your matcha powder in a bone-dry Vitamix or high-speed blender.

2. Add your hot water, and coconut manna/butter and carefully blend on low. After a few seconds, slowly bring to medium-high power. Blend for about 10-15 additional seconds until frothy and well-combined. Add sweetener if desired.

3. Divide matcha mixture between two serving cups. Pour your almond milk into the side of the cup to top off. Enjoy.
