Julianne Moore’s Easy (and Free!) Trick for Maintaining Perfect Skin
On screen, Academy Award-winning actress Julianne Moore tends to play smart, sassy, take-no-prisoners women (ahem, President Alma Coin from The Hunger Games). And off-screen, she seems to be killing it at life, too (for starters, the 56-year-old has obviously figured out how to make time stand still).
In an interview with The Cut, Moore shared some of her top beauty and wellness tips—and she goes way beyond the typical celeb advice. She gets specific, with intel I haven't seen elsewhere. Case in point: "sushi face." (Think of it as "sugar face's" water-retaining cousin.)
Keep reading for 5 pieces of outside-the-box health and beauty tips from Moore.
1. She only walks on the shady side of the street
"It’s true! You get used to it, and then you can’t stand to be in the sun," Moore says. (Note to self: Flawless, porcelain skin requires effort all day long—but hey, it's free.) "I can't even take the light because of my eyes. I do it to my husband all the time where he’ll be like, 'I’m cold,' but then I’m like, 'Let’s walk in the shade.'"
2. And she'll take a seat inside, thankyouverymuch
Be warned: Moore is ready to shatter your best-brunch-life dreams of chatting and laughing away with your crew at a sidewalk café. "No way," Moore says. "I hate it. You’re baking in the sun. Plus in New York, the cars are driving by and all the dirt flies into your food. I’m that person who is like, I want a table inside. But you know what, you can always find one!"
3. She says "sushi face" is a very real thing
"Heck yeah," says Moore, who first started talking about post-sushi-eating puffiness several years ago. "It’s because of the sodium. My husband loves to have sushi in LA because it’s so good out there. But if I’m there for an awards show or something, I’m like, 'No, I'm not doing it the night before the Golden Globes.' My face will be puffy."
4. She swears by sunscreen, moisturizer—and her retainer
"I like to find a moisturizer that has SPF," Moore says. "If you have a moisturizer you like with sunscreen in it, it’s very easy to get your SPF, even if it has an SPF 15. If you’re at the beach, that’s probably not enough. But in the city all day long, that’s good." Moore also shared her nightly beauty routine: "I put on some eye cream, moisturizer, and put my retainer in and go to bed," she says. "I've heard a lot of people say, 'I'm supposed to wear my retainer forever?' Yes, I have worn it every single night. And the times I haven't, I was sorry."
5. She finally found the kind of yoga she loves
"Ashtanga yoga is really, really important to me," Moore says. "I came to it in my late 30s. The kind of yoga that I had done sporadically before was not that engaging for me. Ashtanga isn’t something I can necessarily do every day but I try to do it four times a week, except when I’m at Cannes and I can’t do anything. And I try to walk everywhere in New York."
