HBO closed its gender pay gap—and credits Reese Witherspoon for making it happen

While Iceland has made major strides in making equal pay the gold standard (it’s actually now illegal in the country for men to be paid more than women), the United States is hardly up to speed in that department. But thanks in part to initiatives like Time’s Up and #MeToo that are empowering women to speak up and speak out, it’s clear that American ladies are getting. stuff. done. In fact, HBO claims to have just closed its pay gap—and a company exec credits Big Little Lies actress and executive producer Reese Witherspoon, who is involved in the Time’s Up movement, for making it happen.

“We just finished our process where we went through and made sure that there were no inappropriate disparities in pay; and where there were, if we found any, we corrected it going forward. And that is a direct result of the Time’s Up movement.” —Casey Bloys, HBO

“One of the things that’s come out of thinking about the movement and some conversations with Reese, who’s really at the forefront, is something we’ve done recently,” Casey Bloys, HBO’s president of programming, told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve proactively gone through all of our shows—in fact, we just finished our process where we went through and made sure that there were no inappropriate disparities in pay; and where there were, if we found any, we corrected it going forward. And that is a direct result of the Time’s Up movement.”

The movement is clearly making an impact on Hollywood, and hopefully it won’t take long for other major companies to jump onboard with closing the gender pay gap, too.
