With an outsole (the brown bottom sole) that’s 40 percent recycled rubber and 10 percent rice husks, the Court sneaker joins the Kickoff Trainer in Madewell’s lineup of sustainability-minded sneaker offerings. Rice husks in sneaker soles help to cut down the amount of rubber used while providing better traction. The laces are made with cotton farmed under the Better Cotton Initiative, a nonprofit dedicated to making global cotton production more sustainable by training farmers on how to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats, reduce the use of “harmful chemicals,” and apply ethical work standards. The leather used for the uppers is made with slightly imperfect leather that otherwise may be thrown out and is sourced from a tannery that achieved a Gold Rating from the Leather Working Group, an organization that works to promote sustainable environmental practices in the leather industry.
Court sneakers align with Madewell’s commitment to sustainable practices as the retailer features The Do Well Shop with everything from recycled cashmere sweaters to Fair Trade Certified jeans. Currently, 44 percent of the brand’s cotton is organic, recycled, or sustainably sourced; 51 percent of its leather is recycled or sustainably sourced; and 8 percent of its synthetic fibers are made from recycled polyester and recycled nylon.
In addition to following eco-friendly practices, both The Court sneakers prioritize comfort by using the MWL Cloudlift insoles for extreme comfort and support. Shop Madewell’s Court sneakers below.
