If you've ever experienced acid reflux, you know that feeling of just wanting it to go away—ASAP. From forgoing wine and spicy food, elevating the upper half of your body while you sleep, and popping prescription pills even though they have been known to do major damage to your body when used long-term, no cure seems too unreasonable for those who can't stomach—literally—the burning pain. But according to a new study, there might be a way easier way to deal.

A new study published in JAMA Otolaryngology found that sipping on alkaline water and following the Mediterranean Diet was just as effective in managing acid reflux as using medication designed to reduce acid production made in the stomach. Researchers found that they key is following a mostly plant-based diet. (Alas, spicy food, coffee, and wine are still recommended to only have in moderation, if at all.)

Just what makes it so effective? Researchers found that plant-based foods are primarily digested in the intestine, not in the stomach like some higher acidic foods are. Feasting on fish, pasta, and caprese salad is a much more welcome prescription than just popping a pill, wouldn't you say?

These 10 foods will help give your digestion a boost too. Or, try taking a daily shot of apple cider vinegar.
