For vulva-owners, humping or grinding uses pressure to stimulate the often-ignored pubic mound, which in turn can activate the nerve-dense internal clitoral network. Grinding can also create feel-good friction against the external portion of the clitoris. So basically, if you think the sexual practice is nothing more than the stuff of high school dalliances, you, my friend, are sorely missing out.

Luckily, there's a whole category of sophisticated sex toys that allow you to replicate the play. Known as ridable vibrators or saddle toys, most grinding toys are quite big and pricey. (The Cowgirl and Motorbunny are two popular examples). But for those short on space and budget, there’s a smaller, more affordable option: the Rocks Off Ruby Glow Grinder ($59), which I believe deserves a spot in almost everyone’s sex toy collection.

What to know about the Ruby Glow grinding vibrator

About the size of an old-school cordless phone, the Ruby Glow grinding vibrator looks like the horned-back of a Stegosaurus. Or a dilapidated toy eggplant. Odd as the shape may seem, its unique form fits its function: The toy is designed to be straddled like a horse’s back and then humped ‘til completion. Half of the silicone toy features ridges against which you can press your nerve-dense clitoris. And the back-half of the toy features a hard, raised bulb that’s shaped to press perfectly into your perineum (the patch of skin between your front genitals and backdoor).

The toy has two motors, each able to deliver 10 different vibration intensities. By combining the buzz and pressure, it practically guarantees an orgasm—and in many cases, a blended orgasm.

For some, the pressing and grinding against the toy may be enough to elicit orgasm. Those who prefer the sensation of vibration to that of pressure—or who enjoy combining the two types of stimulation—however, will be happy to know that this saddle-shaped toy also vibrates. Inside the contoured toy is two motors, each able to deliver 10 different vibration intensities. By combining the buzzy sensation and pressure galore, this toy practically guarantees an orgasm—and in many cases, a blended orgasm.

The few downsides worth considering before adding it to cart start with the toy's width. Anyone who has a wider-set vulva may find that at just two-inches in width, the toy is slimmer than they’d require for full-frontal stimulation. It's also not waterproof—only splash-proof, meaning, you can run it under the tap to clean it, but not fully submerge it for a shower-sex pleasure session.

I also feel it's necessary to point out that this toy is battery operated, which isn't common but can be a perk for those, like me, who often forget to charge their toys. But, it is certainly not the most sustainable design.

My experience with the Ruby Glow grinding vibrator

Before I wax poetic about the Ruby Glow grinding vibrator (spoiler alert: I love it), there are two things you need to know about me: First, non-penetrative play is my preference for solo play, and second, I’m a grinding queen. Basically, this sex toy was made for pleasure-seekers like me.

When I first took the toy out of its box and held it in my hands, I was surprised by how solid it was. Far firmer than the plush upper thigh of my last lover, this toy proved harder than, well, a hard-on. I was also surprised by how small the toy was, generally speaking. Sure, it's marketed as a portable saddle sex toy, but I was nonetheless surprised to learn that a toy designed to be sat on would be smaller than a dildo.

The first time I used it, I stripped off my skivvies, lathered both my labia and the toy in my new favorite water-based lube, and straddled the Ruby Glow grinding vibrator like a horny cowgirl mounting her mare. Truthfully, though, that first round was disappointing: The ridges poked my privates, and I couldn’t get comfortable enough to climax. Not ideal.

Determined to make this humping toy work for me, I tried again the next day. This time I added a dab of lubricant between my labia, but I kept my leggings on when I climbed aboard. Turns out, replicating my teenage romps (by keeping my clothes on) was exactly what I needed to take my sex session from pointy to pleasurable. ICYWW: Yes, the vibrations are intense enough to stimulate through a layer of spandex.

These days, riding the Ruby Glow is my fave low-effort way to masturbate. A totally hands-free sex toy, I grab this toy anytime I need my fingers to scroll Reddit, stimulate my chest tissue, or (uhh) type out sex toy reviews. And at its reasonable price, I’d readily recommend it to anymore who has finger mobility issues, enjoys non-penetrative play, or has a long history of enjoying grinding.
