It's quite simple to agitate my gut. And depending on what I eat, I can get super gassy and experience uncomfortable indigestion. The crux of the issue? I'm not entirely sure what my triggers are. While keeping a food journal for a bit might help me pin them down, I don't love the idea of thinking that hard (or keeping close track of every morsel that goes into my mouth, TBH) when it comes to eating—I just want to enjoy my meals. That's what made the latest gut-focused box from Splendid Spoon so enticing: It sends pre-prepped dishes that benefit your digestive health—stomach ache-free—right to your doorstep.

Splendid Spoon is a meal-delivery service that delivers delicious, ready-to-eat plant-based meals. You can subscribe to weekly selections, or pick an on-demand box, like the Gut Health Bundle ($100), to arrive whenever you're in need. Get an on-demand box during a busy week so you have meals on hand, or order one at the top of the month to freeze so you have bowls to grab whenever you're in the mood.

The Gut Health Bundle includes a selection of five bowls, three smoothies, and three wellness shots, curated by registered dietitian Johane Filemon, MS, RDN.

"Certain foods can improve your gut health by supporting the good bacteria in your gut, which helps balance your microbiome and replenish gut-healthy nutrients that you may have been deficient in," says Filemon. "At the very least, if gut health is on your mind, you need to be doing the basics. That means, first and foremost, eating a wide variety of plant-based foods. If you are already doing this and you still feel that something is off, this may be a good opportunity to hone in on eating more foods that are particularly rich in gut-healthy nutrients, such as the ones in this box."

The five bowls that come in the Gut Health Bundle are a Kimchi Fried Quinoa Grain Bowl, Aloo Gobi Quinoa Bowl, Beans and Greens Soup, Masala Khiri Soup, and Dan Dan Noodles. You also get three smoothies and can choose from: Orange Hibiscus, Blackberry Basil, Carrot Ginger Chia, Dragon Fruit Berry, and Power Greens. Finally, three digestion shots are included, and contain gut-friendly ingredients like ginger, apple juice, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and pepper. (Or you can opt for wellness shots, which include ginger, orange juice, lemon juice, and oregano extract.)

"Consuming these digestion-friendly foods will increase your intake of fiber, prebiotics, and many other nutrients required to feed the good bacteria in your gut, support the balance of your gut, and promote overall health," says Filemon.

My thoughts on the Splendid Spoon Gut Health Bundle

First things first: I thought that every single one of meals are perfectly portioned and delicious. While I did zhuzh up the Dan Dan noodles with a splash of soy sauce and sesame oil, I happily scarfed down all of the other bowls completely as-is. I'm not usually a huge fan of pre-made smoothies (they're never as thick as the ones that are freshly made, no?) but I actually really enjoyed the smoothies in this box. They tasted fresh, delicious, and super refreshing. And having those little digestion shots on hand post-meal was clutch—I loved the spicy little kick from the ginger and pepper.

I chose to freeze most of my bowls. I do enjoy cooking and do it often, but when I get busy or I'm just not feeling up to it after work, I'll order takeout. In these moments, I reached for my Splendid Spoon bowls instead. I loved having frozen dishes ready to go in my freezer that were real-deal in terms of quality—far superior to what you'd find in the frozen dinner section of your grocery store, IMO. They tasted great and made me feel even better.

On that note, as someone who experiences lots of gas, bloating, and general stomach discomfort, I loved having meals around that made my sensitive digestive system feel good and well-balanced after eating. This box didn’t transform my gut health or fix my digestion (five meals and some smoothies could never!), but each one soothed my stomach woes and tasted delicious. They gave me piece of mind that I was eating nutritious food that won’t leave me with a tummy ache. And that’s incredibly valuable.

Bottom line? If you want to prioritize gut health without having to think too hard, the Splendid Spoon Gut Health Bundle is the perfect option. You get a tasty box of ready-to-eat meals that keep you eating well even when you're strapped for time.
