With SLT’s new Soho studio, which opens January 21, fans (and the fitness curious) now stand a way better chance of nabbing a spot at the perpetually booked Megaformer workout.
“We’re so excited to offer our downtown clients a more convenient location,” explains founder Amanda Freeman. “They’ve been hauling their butts uptown from Tribeca, Brooklyn, Soho, and the West Village for over a year now.”
And they’ve been enduring waitlists for the tricked-out Pilates workout that’s well-known for toning many an aforementioned tush about town. The Soho location should support about 75 classes a week.
Unlike the simple Midtown space, this one has the charms of a Soho loft. It was previously residential, said Freeman, when we test-drove the space last week.
It has gorgeous hard-wood floors, giant windows that look out onto Crosby Street, and soaring 12-foot-plus ceiling, which this tall reporter noticed right away. Now even supermodels standing on the Megaformers (it’s a common part of the workout) won’t risk bumping their heads on the ceiling.
The elevator opens right into the studio, which features 10 sparkly new machines, all in a single file line, so everyone can check their oblique pikes in the mirror.
“We’re proud of the sleek design and the warm and friendly vibe,” says Freeman, who added two bathrooms within the studio (no more traipsing down the hall with a key) and a change room (sadly, no shower).
There’s no second room for SLT Yoga or Shred classes (yet). Though maybe at the next SLT location? Freeman says she’s already scouting another… —Melisse Gelula
