Supermodel Elle Macpherson needs to move every day—no surprise considering she's a self-care devotee with plenty of smoothie recipes to divulge. Here, the Well+Good Council member shares her secrets for staying motivated to get active on the reg so that she can live her best life.

Feeling energized is one of my main motivations for sticking to a healthy lifestyle. I'm not too hard on myself though—there are no strict regimens because I don’t believe in extremes.

My exercise is moderate—I prefer to do 45 minutes of something outside in nature everyday. And I never look at the number on the scale. I'm more concerned with how I feel. I want to be energized and feel strong.

To ensure that I move my body every day, I plot my exercise like I would a business meeting. I find that if I don't slot it in, it'll risk being overlooked.

Keep reading for the 4 things that keep me motivated to move every single day—so I'm ready to tackle anything.

Return to classic fitness practices

I've noticed that old-school exercise is cool again. I used to spend a lot of time at the gym, but now I might walk on the beach, practice yoga with friends, surf, or go skiing or water skiing. I also love swimming long distance—I’ll sometimes go for an hour at a time. Being outside makes me feel happy, so when I'm outside doing something I enjoy, the benefits are both physical and mental.

Invest in cute athleisure

Investing in new workout clothes can be really motivating. I love the design aesthetic and philosophy of P.E. Nation, which is all about the sporty-sexy thing that’s similar to my own ethos not just for working out, but also for running around day-to-day. I look for outfits that are comfortable, chic, and easy-to-wear.

Hydration is key

My nutritional doctor Dr. Laubscher, Ph.D. has taught me that being properly hydrated makes a huge difference to health, energy, vitality, and even immunity. Drinking enough water cleanses the digestive system, ignites your metabolism, and buffers excess acids. Personally, I like to drink between two and three liters everyday—a little more if I've done a workout.

Keep snacks on-hand

In the morning, I drink my greens—the greener the better! Throughout the day, I'll snack on an avocado, nuts and seeds, herbal tea, almond butter on crackers, dark chocolate, or a smoothie made with our Nourishing Protein Peruvian Chocolate, half an avocado, and filtered water.

I love snacking on walnuts—it's a complete protein snack that's believed to benefit brain function. I always soak nuts overnight before eating and keep a handful in the fridge. This helps release enzymes for digestion. If I need something thirst quenching, I’ll make a homemade lemonade with water, cayenne pepper, lemon, agave, and ice. The cayenne is also good for a quick metabolism boost.
