But thanks to TikTok, the drink—which originates in South Korea—totally blew up, making everyone want to try their hand at creating it at home. Surprisingly, it only takes a few minutes to turn the instant coffee version into a cloud-like beverage, and the same goes for antioxidant-packed matcha. All you need to do is replace the coffee with your go-to green leaf powder and you're golden.
Despite looking like you need coffee shop-level tools to make the cloud-like beverage, the recipe only requires a few ingredients and some whisking skills to make a whipped matcha latte. After combining your matcha powder, a little sugar (coconut sugar is a great alternative to the refined sugar used in typical whipped coffee recipes), and hot water in a bowl, you simply beat the mixture until it's thick and creamy. Then you can pour it over a few ice cubes and your favorite alt-milk.
The next time you're getting bored with your daily latte and want to switch things up, make a whipped matcha latte for yourself. You'll wind up with a photo-worthy beverage that would 100 percent make your barista proud.
Whipped matcha latte
2 tablespoons matcha powder
2 tablespoons coconut sugar
2 tablespoons hot water
1 cup milk or alt-milk (whole, skim, oat, soy, almond, cashew, etc.)
1. Put the matcha in a bowl. Add two tablespoons hot water, and mix until the matcha is completely dissolved.
2. Stir in two tablespoons coconut sugar. Then using a hand mixer, beat the mixture until it’s thick and frothy. This will take a while.
3. Once it’s ready, partially fill a glass with some ice cubes and your alt-milk of choice, leaving room for the matcha. Add any flavorings you want, like vanilla creamer. Then, scoop or pour the whipped matcha on top and sip away.
